Pardoner's Tale The Pardoner's Tale: Deception and Foolishness There are several types of foolishness being described in the Pardoner's Tale itself. He describes gluttony in general, then specifically wine. He talks of gambling, taking bets and the like, and of swearing. The exemplum of his sermon describes three fools who go foolishly seeking death, then find it in a large amount of gold. Deception is another topic addressed by the Pardoner: he comes right out and says that he is a con artist, and that he is out to take people's money. In his tale, deception by the rioters leads to the death of all three. These are good points, but there is another deception the Pardoner plays, and gets caught: his sermon is a direct chastisement of the Host, who is not pleased by this. As a whole, Chaucer effectively uses this character of The Pardoner to point out some of the more foolish and deceptive aspects of other characters in the Tales as well. In the beginning, the Narrator describes The Pardoner in some quite undesirable terms. His is the characterization that comes closest to making a judgement call - in most cases, the judgement is left to the reader. Yet, I trowe he were a gelding or a mare, is hardly non-judgmental (97.693). The Narrator also spends a bit of time describing the different relics and showing the truth of what each relic really is; however, there is a point in his negative description of both the physical and moral aspects of this character. The Pardoner represents the Ugly Truth. The Knight is grand, the Wife is pretty, but the Pardoner is downright ugly. He is also the only pilgrim to acknowledge his shortcomings - he knows he is a con artist and liar, and in his tale's prologue freely admits this in both words and actions. The Pardoner then proceeds with the tale itself, which is a deception as well. In the sermon, he describes gluttony in detail, and defines it as not just overeating, but the intense pleasure of doing so. He also denounces wine, with graphic examples of drunkenness. He discusses the negative merits of swearing and cursing. Then, he closes the sermon itself with a condemnation of gambling. There are several things going on here. The first, most obvious hypocrisy is that before telling this tale, the Pardoner insisted on stopping at an inn for food and beer. He is also partaking in a bet - he who tells the best story wins. However, there is another level. This sermon is retaliation to the Host, who just before asking the Pardoner to speak has been cursing and talking about using beer as medicine to mend his broken heart. It can be suspected that the Host is drunk, as well. However, when addressing the Pardoner, the Host intentionally insults him: 'Thou bel ami, thou Pardoner,' he saide, / 'Tel us som mirthe or japes right anon (165.30-31). The Pardoner, being of rather quick wit, replies: 'It shal be doon,' quod he, 'by Saint Ronion?' (165.33). The reference to St. Ronion is a possible play on runnion, which is possibly defined as a sexual joke (165, footnote 8). Thus, the Host has rather offended the Pardoner, who calls a stop at an inn to think upon som honeste thing whil that I drinke (165.40). This exchange is picked up once again after The Pardoner's Tale is done. Several things from the Tale upset the Host. He is the owner of a tavern, encouraging food and drink. He himself likes to partake of these things. He also swears quite readily, and from the General Prologue, we know the Host was the one to propose the storytelling game in the first place. So, at the end of the Pardoner's Tale, when the Pardoner suggests ?that our Hoste shal biginne, / For he is most envoluped in sinne (178.653-654), it is in direct response to the insult at the beginning of the Pardoner's turn to tell a Tale. This nearly starts a physical fight - the intervention of the Knight prevents this infighting from progressing further. The Pardoner's sermon, while perhaps aimed at the Host, also describes much of the rest of the pilgrimage. Rather than killing Joseph, they sought profit in him. The brothers acted selfishly and so they betray him by selling him to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver. The Pardoner's Tale is a good example of a story containing these elements. In this story, readers see a group of rioters at a local tavern inn drinking and having a good time. As they look behind them they see a coffin being carried away. The rioters soon find out that it the person in the coffin was a very good friend of theirs. As sad and angry as they are, they set off to find out who has killed their companion. An old man directs the three rioters to a tree down the road and tells them that Death killed their friend. The rioters set out to find Death and kill him in revenge. When they reach the tree, they spot a treasure. They decide to wait until dark to take the findings. While they all wait, one rioter decided to go to town to get them all food. This rioter comes up with an idea that he should kill the other two men and take the treasure for himself. The other two rioters think likewise. They devise a plan to kill the other friend and split the treasure in two parts instead of three. As it is seen in the story of Joseph, his brothers betray him. Because they are jealous of Joseph, their own flesh and blood, they acted selfish and greedy. They wanted to kill him, but selling him for money would benefit them more. The rioters acted similarly. They are all friends who set out on a mission. Once money is brought into the picture, everyone has different feelings. They all plot to kill one another and betray each other because they want a bigger share of the profit. In this case, everyone ends up dead. The one sent to town decides to put poison in the drinks and the rioters left by the tree plot to stab him. When they finally do stab him, they think they are home free. They continue to feast and when they drink they too end up dead. In this case no one was successful. Everyone ends up with nothing. Their greed led them to their death. Unlike the rioters, the betrayal of Joseph by his brothers benefited him in the long run. He ends up interpreting dreams for the Pharaoh of Egypt. The Pardoner's Tale is a good work to incorporate into the syllabus because it teaches a valuable lesson about the relationship of friends and what limits friends go to in order to betray each other. Greed and jealousy are key elements that make someone betray another person. An example of what people are usually greedy about is money. Money is a materialistic item in which everyone wants. When given the right opportunity, one will do anything for it even if it means betraying friends or especially family members. A question that this story raises is How far will people go in order to make themselves happy? In this case the rioters went a far as they possibly could. They plotted to kill each other for something that was not even rightfully theirs. If they had not found the treasure, they would of still been alive. The Pardoner's Tale can easily be connected to the course assignments because although there is betrayal, there is an element of love in it also. Although it is not easily seen, love is shown. The rioters showed love and compassion when they found out that their friend had died. At once they got together to find the person that had killed him. If they did not love or care about this person they would not have even bothered to ask who had gotten killed. This story contradicts the story of Joseph somewhat because although

Eugene Ionesco's "Rhinoceros": True Means Resides in Action not Words I awoke sweating. Breathing heavily, I glanced over at my clock and read the time. 4:00 AM. I wasn't sure if this was reality or not so I ran my palm over my scalp. No bump. A sigh of relief came over me. "Phew," I said, "it was only a dream." This is a dream I have had often throughout the past couple of years. Each time, the bump in my dream gets bigger and bigger and each time I wake up I'm more and more frightened that the dream was real. "I will not be a rhinoceros," I tell myself over and over. "I will not." These words I tell myself are nearly meaningless though. They are words and nothing more. Futile attempts to ease the pain of my "rhinocerotic" life. The only way to really not become a rhinoceros is by making the existential decision not to do so. A main theme in Eugene Ionesco's, Rhinoceros, is that true meaning resides in action rather than in mere words. A resistance to taking action then results in one's becoming a rhinoceros. Jean illustrates this in the beginning of Act 2, scene 2, when we see Jean and Berenger bickering. Berenger feels that Jean isn't looking or feeling well and threatens to get him a doctor. Jean resists by saying, "You're not going to get the doctor because I don't want the doctor. I can look after myself." (pp. 62) This refusal comes from his arrogant view of himself as a "Master of [his] own thoughts," (pp. 61) and "[Having] will-power!" (pp. 7) By seeing the doctor, Jean would have put himself in the position of taking responsibility for his actions and seeing that he wasn't always the "master of his own thoughts" and that his will-power was actually quite weak. It would be admitting the meaninglessness in his futile attempts to remain a human. He didn't want to see that he, in fact, was becoming a rhinoceros. Had Jean agreed to see a doctor, he may have been saved. By seeing the doctor, Jean would have come to terms with his becoming a rhinoceros. After coming to terms with his current state, he could then change his subsequent state to one of taking action to be an individual. Berenger, however, illustrates the power in making an existential decision. The trumpeting call of the rhinoceros was a persuasive one, but Berenger was able to resist it through his commitment and determination. A Difficult Decision Essay

I chose to write about a difficult decision I had to make years ago. I had to choose between leaving my family in hope of employment, or continue to let tax money support all of us. It was the best decision I have ever made. Starting truly from nothing, to living a normal happy life, and none of this was possible without my wife. She is the true warrior. She stuck by me through this whole thing. She always supported my decisions. It was a very confusing time in my life, but I had to do what was best for my family. In March of 2008, I was married to my wife, Lorene. I was 18 years old and ready to start a family. I was stupid. I made decent money working construction, but never expected to be laid off. My first son was born in October of 2008. So I got the family that I wanted, I just didn’t have a job now. We lived in Yucca Valley, California, where my Mother rented a home to us. She was a recovering alcoholic. She lived in Arizona with her husband at the time. Her name was Lari Lee Packer. I know, boys first name. Doctors told her that if she ever drank alcohol again, she would die. After I told her husband many times not to bring alcohol in the house, he continued. So in January of 2009, my Mother spent a few weeks drinking with her husband, and died. She was 44 years old. Immediately after her death, people were calling, and showing up at my Mother’s house in California. A lot of the people that showed up wanted me to sign papers to take over my Mother’s debt. My older brother had already advised me to refuse. The other party of people that came were there only to inform us that we had 24 hours to get out. My life was falling apart. We didn’t have any family in the area, nor any transportation. I was terrified. We ended up staying at a motel for two weeks, then moved down to the city of San Bernardino, where we lived with Lorene’s sister. Another year went by and we were still on welfare, and poorer than ever. I had nothing but my family, and a hard choice to make. I could stay and hope things would get better, or fly to my brother’s house in North Carolina and seek employment. It felt like such a long shot, but I had to do what was right. I couldn’t continue to feel useless. I made a family, just to be unable to provide for them. So I took the risk and flew to my brother’s house. I walked two miles down the railroad tracks everyday, to go apply for jobs. On the fourth day, I was hired at McDonalds and a gas station. It sounds pathetic, but I no longer had standards since I was unemployed for so long. I would work endless hours, only to come home, collapse on my brother’s couch for four hours, get up and do it again. I continued this schedule for three weeks before deciding to leave McDonalds. By the time I received my last check from McDonalds, I had saved enough money, and flew my family to North Carolina. In conclusion, it was a difficult decision to leave my family and venture into the unknown, but it was the best decision I have ever made. I think people need to remind themselves from time to time, â€Å"what is best for the family†? I now work as a hotel desk clerk, and I have a lot of free time. After discovering how much free time was available, I had to further pursue my education. So here I am, and that’s what’s best for my family. An elementary school teacher in â€Å"The History Teacher† tries to shelter his students from what he thinks would affect the children’s view on the world while parents in â€Å"A Barred Owl† assure their â€Å"wakened child† that the â€Å"boom of an owl’s voice† are simple questions from a curious â€Å"forest bird†. Both writers convey that grown-ups who try to preserve the innocence of children only delay the inevitable. Richard Wilbur depicts a common situation of a frightened child in the dark of the night seeking guidance from mom and dad. The writer distinguishes the mood and setting with lines such as, â€Å"The warping night air,† or, â€Å"darkened room. † Wilbur uses these lines to help the reader understand the mood of the poem by using certain diction to portray the fear that is present within this child’s bedroom. Little did these children know that their history teacher is presenting altered historical events in order to protect their innocence. By using the lines, â€Å"the Ice Age was really just the Chilly Age,† or, â€Å"the Stone Age became the Gravel Age,† Collins demonstrates the teachers attempt to shield the students from the outside world. The author speaks in third person to create an image in which the audience can fully understand rather than reading from first person. By the author choosing third person rather than first person, the audience will not read from a perspective from a character within the story, therefore receiving a reliable perspective and not â€Å"one side of the story†. Writer Billy Collins helps the reader further understand how the teachers attempt to shelter his students from the cruel Darwinism of the world did nothing but harm their education. The lines, â€Å"The children †¦ torment the weak and the smart,† and, â€Å"he gathered his notes †¦ wondering if they would believe†¦Ã¢â‚¬  displays the reality of the teacher being the ignorant character other than the students by harming their education in order to protect them from the inevitable. With Richard Wilbur using the lines â€Å"And send a small child back to sleep at night† to the lines â€Å"Borne up to some dark branch and eaten raw† in â€Å"A Barred Owl† the writer allows the audience to understand the child’s contentment as she goes to sleep as an innocent child. The audience also understands that with the child being sent to bed with a white lie, she remains ignorant from the Darwinism of the world. Although, in Billy Collins’ â€Å"The History Teacher† the students continue to act in Darwinism as they carry on to â€Å"torment the weak and the smart†¦ breaking their glasses,† and both the teacher and children go home from learning and feeling nothing when the child and parents in â€Å"A Barred Owl† go to sleep with peace and understanding that fear is no where to be found. The History Teacher† is told in third person point of view for the audience to conceive both sides of the result the teacher has caused by his choice of guidance. â€Å"A Barred Owl† is written in first person point of view to display the parents decision on soothing a frightened child; both poems present both sides of the outcomes the adults cause. Richard Wilbur and Billy Collins expose adults’ attempt to prevent children from losing their innocence although the writers also display an example of adults doing anything possible, striving to prohibit what is destined. Parents should ease children into the real world rather than be afraid of their children entering corruption. â€Å"A Barred Owl† and â€Å"The History Teacher† opens adults’ eyes to where adults realize when and where a child should enter the real world. Adults should guide children through troubling times and not alter their view of the world so much it can become destructive.

All based on the same myth of Jason and Medea, Euripides Medea, Apollonius of Rhodes the Argonautika, and Ovids Metamorphoses each describe a unique version of the same character. The initial characterization of Medea in Euripides play serves as the basis in which both Apollonius and Ovid base their interpretation of Medea. Although each, in its own defining events, shape a similar Medea who overcomes similar difficulties, the execution of each calls for a different interpretation of the woman by the reader. The organization of each story immensely effects the perspective given to the reader. A spouse who murders his cheating wife is more wrong than the wife who cheated in the first place, and killing his children to get revenge would be an unspeakable deed. A reader from today cant relate to the thought process of Medea, which lends a slim margin to any sympathy for the character. Euripides, however, does create slight sympathy for her when she mentions her lack of family and friends due to betraying them to be with Jason, who in turn betrays her. This piece of Euripides story, though, is too miniscule to counteract the menacing thoughts of Medea. This same small mention is brought about in Ovids version, but it also is just a brief point without much depth. The Argonautika takes a much more sympathetic route by describing Medea as a much younger, innocent girl. The fact that the second story shows the beginning more in depth leads the reader to see the hardships that may have led her to become the bitter woman Euripides depicts. Neither Euripides nor Ovid include the hateful image of Medeas father, which gives an immediate understanding to the reader as to why Medea can never go back to her homeland. Her betrayal to her father was too great.
